Clinical Purpose

Safe morphine dosing, emergency pain management

⚠️ Warnings and Limitations

Contraindications:

  • ⚠️ CONTRAINDICATED in severe head trauma (risk ↑ ICP)
  • ⚠️ CAUTION in severe asthma/COPD (respiratory depression)
  • ⚠️ CAUTION in hypovolemic shock (peripheral vasodilation)
  • ⚠️ AVOID if suspected airway obstruction
  • ⚠️ Dose reduction in renal/hepatic insufficiency

Limitations:

  • Not indicated for neuropathic pain (prefer ketamine)
  • Onset 5-10 minutes IV, 15-30 minutes IM/SC
  • Active metabolites (morphine-6-glucuronide) with renal clearance
  • Interaction with benzodiazepines: ↑↑ respiratory depression

  • Reduce dose 50% in elderly >65 years and renal/hepatic insufficiency
